TOEFL Writing Practice Task

Directions: Give yourself 3 minutes to read the passage.

The reading and the lecture are both about the origin of the comic medium. The reading states that its origin is from America while the lecturer contradicts this claim. He thinks the comic medium origins are from before the americans one, and its expression can be found in all around the world in theirs own unique ways.

Fist of all, the reading marks Hogan's Alley as the first comic strip that appeared in America in the 1890s, but the lecturer points out that there were many popular comic strips in Europe before that time. Most of the charcaters, portraired in those strips, were actually immigrants who travelled to America. Coincidently, the main character of Hogan's Alley, the Yellow Kid, a low income boy from New York, could have been perfectly inspired by those first immigrant from the ending of the ninteen century.

Second, the reading claims that even the first popular comic book in the world was created in America, the Action Comics, which main and more popular character was and still is Super man. The lecturer, instead, contradicts this claim by stating that before Superman a very popular character was created in Belgium with similar characteristics. Also, the lecturer points out that the artist that created Superman was actually Canadian.

The other reason why the lecturer states that the reading claiming is not accurate, is the one about the origin of the europe comics influenced by Disney comic books. The lecturer claims that european charactes like Smurfs and Asterix have their own european touch and distintic characteristics. Even those comic characters created for Disney in Europe are drawing by european artists who applied their own style. Same as those created by the populars japanesse comic medium.

In conclusion, comic medium is an art that find its expression in every part of the world with their own style and unique local influence.
