Torreya tree

Essay topics:

Torreya tree

The reading and the lecture are both about Torreya taxifolia which is a type of tree in Florida becoming extinct. The author of the article presents three solutions to prevent the decline of Torreya. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. Her position is that none of three solutions will satisfactorily solve the problem of extinction of Torreya.
According to the reading, the first way to save Torreya is reestablishing it in the same location -Northern Florida which have a specific microclimate. The article mentions that the microclimate is wet and cool, and it is completely suitable for Torreya’s development. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that Global warming has negatively affected on the climate of Florida. Additionally, she points out that climate will become drier in the whole area of Florida.
Secondly, the author suggests that moving Torreya to different locations is also an effective way because Torreya could be easily migrated by human to another environment suited for its survival. In the articles, it is said that Torreya seeds will be able to grow in forests further north which have a cooler temperature than Florida. The professor, however, asserts that moving Torreya to another area will cause some consequences on other species of plant. She also makes it clear by giving an example about the black locust tree which had been already moved to another place. As a result, the black locust tree spread dramatically and made other plants and trees living there become endangered species.
Finally, the author posits that bringing Torreya to research center not only preserves Torreya but also brings some benefits to scientists. The author contends that it will be more convenient for researchers both to protect the species and do research on Torreya. In contrast, the lecturer’s stance is that large population and genetic diversity in Torreya’s community are the key factors for it to resist disease. She also notes that research center could not have enough capacities to satisfy the large population of Torreya so that this solution will not be realistic in the long term.
