TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

The reading states that Chaco Canyon the "great house" was massive and contained large space and were three or four stories high and the archaeologists are determining how the buildings are used by providing three reasons of support. In contrast, the professor states refute all the three reasons of support given by the reading passage about the usage of Chaco building.

First of all, the reading states that Chaco was used to house hundreds of people and resembles apartment building at Taos, Mexico where many people have been living for centuries. However, the professor refutes by stating that only a few people lived inside the Chaco building. He further states that fireplaces would be used by families staying inside the building and only a few of them were found. As a result, few families lived inside the great building.

Second, the reading mentions that Chaco building was used for storing food like grain maize which was the major food consumed by the people living in Chaco. Nevertheless, the professor opposes this point by stating that excavation of that place resulted in failure for finding any traces of grain maize or grain containers.

Finally, the reading purports that building was used for a ceremonial purpose. Food was prepared in pots and was thrown away in the building. However, the professor says that other materials which are not used in ceremonial function were also found like sand, building tools. He also mentions that pots that were found during excavation might have been used by the workers.
