TPO-08 - Integrated Writing Task Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including ki

The reading passage discusses an interesting topic about the Chevalier de Seingalt's memoir, a controversial character of the 1700s in Europe, and provides three reasons for support the lack of accuracy of his memoir. However, the lecture casts doubts on the claims of the article and refutes each of the reasons given by the reading passage.

First, the reading passage explains that the memoirs reports wrongly that Chevalier was a wealthy man, when the reality pointed that he had to borrow an important amount of money from a Swiss merchant. On the contrary, the lecture justifies the borrow done by Chevalier by arguing that his need of cash, in the gap of selling his house and receiving the payment, forced him to ask for the load and that is not a sign of lack of wealthy.

Secondly, the reading passages argues about the skepticism of critics about the accuracy of his conversation with Voltair sustaining that nobody could have remembered the exactly words of a conversation occurred many years before. The lecture challenges this point by explaining that Chevalier actually wrote the conversation immediately after of having it with Voltair and that Chevalier continuously consulted his notes when writing the memoir.

Finally, the reading passage exposes how critics rejects the idea of Chevalier escaping form a Venice's prison. They sustains that the truth was that good friend of Chevalier in Venice payed the bribe who free him. In opposition, the lecture exposes how some document's records tells about a reconstruction done on the roof of the prison from where Chevaliers described to escape in his memoir. In addition, many others prisoners had more powerful friends than Chevalier and even though they could not get their freedom.
