The reading and lecture are both about "let it burn" policy. The author of the reading believes that huge fire of Yellow stone in 1988, which burnt for two months, prompted more and more people to call for its replacement by putting off the fire as soon as it starts. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that fires are a natural part of the environment. Not only are not they disruptive but they create a good foundation for nature.
First of all, the author points out that Yellowstone fires had catastrophic effects on the forest. It is mentioned that flames had made the trees blackened along with small plants being totally burnt out. This point is challenged by the lecture by saying that after the fire newer plants were introduced to the Yellowstone forest. diminishing more and more trees, fire opened up unshaded regions which not only provided the favorable habitat for smaller plants but also trigger the growth of seeds of some plants which need high solar radiation for germination.
Secondly, the author contends that the fire also had irreversible consequences. The article notes that even those large animals that made their way out of fire wouldn't return due to lack of food. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests the fire caused an increment in the number of certain animals like hares and rabbits, which would, in turn, increase the number of their predators too. She elaborates on this point by mentioning that this augment in the number of some animals will eventually cause the food chain of Yellowstone forest to become stronger.
Finally, the author states that this natural fire actually had adverse effects on tourism of the park. The article establishes that since the forest was on fire, tourists preferred not to come to the park which eventually hurt the local economy. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits the negative effect of the fire only affected the tourism of that region in 1988. She puts forth on the idea that this fire was an exception. Lack of rainfall, strong winds, and other factors caused a strong fire in that year, which never occurred again. Therefore, tourists kept coming to the park from the next year.
