TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

In the lecture, the professor discusses how genetically modified trees can have some drawbacks. This casts doubt on the reading, which shows only benefits about genetic modification of tree can provide.

First, the professor asserts that genetic modified (GM) trees are resistant to only specific types of pest, so it doesn’t ensure they will survive. For example, in case of new pests they are more likely to die. This contradicts the reading, which claims the GM trees are stronger and have more probability of withstanding disease.

In addition, the lectures argues that GM trees have higher costs than natural trees. For instance, by law, every time that farmers get the harvest they have to pay again to plant new tree, which increase the final yield cost. This opposes the article, which asserts that genetically modified trees bring a number of economic benefits to those who grow them.

Finally, the speaker explains GM trees cause more damage to the local environment. They compete with the natural trees for resources such as water and nutrients. This refutes the text, which states that the GM can prevent the overexploitation of wild trees because they can be replaced after harvest.

In conclusion, the professor disagrees with the reading on all three points, and believes that the genetic modified trees don’t have enough benefits to replace the natural trees.
