TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

Both the reading and the lecture discuss genetic modification which is a technique used to alter an organism's genes. The passage suggest that there are some beneficial points in using genetic modification and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecture opposes the justification given by the author and regards them based on fallacious arguments.

First off, according to the passage, genetically modified trees are more quickly to survive in harsh conditions in comparison with nature trees. In order to clarify its statement, it comes up with an example that in Hawaii the native papaya trees have been damaged several times by ring spot virus infections. Whereas, genetically modified papayas could resist against them and put an end to this kind of virus problems. The lecture challenges this claim by stating that although maybe genetically modified trees can be resistant to one particular condition, they cannot survive in other conditions. In fact, if climate changes, all the modified trees will wipe out because they are uniform, but a few nature trees damage in the same conditions.

In addition, the reading assert that the genetically modified trees have some economic advantages because these trees incline to grow quickly and be more productive. In contrast, the lecture casts doubt on this claim by stating that hidden cost of planting modified trees is considerable. On other words, although the expense of pesticide is low, farmer need to pay every time they want to plant genetically modified trees.

Finally, despite the fact that the author of the passage thinks explosive demands for woods in many areas can be satisfied by utilising this technology, the lecture says that the nature trees can be damaged by this technique. Since the genetically modified trees tend to grow aggressively, the nature ones cannot compete with them over water and nutrition.
