The article claims that a species of tree, the yellow cedar, which is common in northwestern North America, have been decreasing and provide three hypotheses for it. In contrast, the professor expresses that these reasons are inadequate, hence he refutes each the author's reasons.

First, the reading states that the yellow cedar decline may be caused by the cedar bark beetle, which is insect parasite. Conversely, the speaker oppose this point by expressing that the yellow cedars tree is much more resistance against this kind of parasite, because the bark of this tree is saturated of poisons, which prevent of be attacked by insect parasites. So, the cedar bark beetle can not be the main cause of the yellow cedar decline.

Second, the passage explains that brown bears may decline the cedar trees, because this kind of animal eats the tree bark, which has higher sugar content. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes this matter by saying that the yellow cedar, which are in the island, have been declining, while there are not any brown bears. Hence, Brown bears can not be responsible for the yellow cedar decrease.

In the third place, the text mentions that change the pattern of seasonal damage roots of the cedar trees. In contrast, the professor explain that the author's hypnoses can be right for trees, which locate in high altitude, while most of the cedar trees decline relates the cedar trees which are in low elevation.
