The reading and the lecture are both about the Peary's report when he visited North Pole in 1909. While the reading provides three evidence of support to Peary's claim, the lecture opposes these evidences by saying that there is no solid data, and the evidence is not convincing.
First of all, the passage mentions that there was a committee from the National Geographic Society was formed to investigate about Peary's records, and it concluded that Peary's indeed reached the North Pole. The lecturer, on the other hand, casts doubt on this evidence by saying that the committee did not complete the mission till the end. She argues that the committee was formed from close friends of him, who funded his trip was money. Moreover, She says that the investigation last only for two days, which is very short. Therefore the results are all biased and not trustworthy.
Second, the author of the reading states that the duration of Peary's trip was thirty-seven days, which is very correct because Tom Avery, who is a British explorer, took less than thirty-seven days using the same number, kind and even the same breed of dog Peary used. On contrast, the speaker explains that Tom's trip was completely different that Peary's one. He puts forth the idea that the weight in Tom's trip was much less than Peary's journey because there was no food, as he had received the food by airplane. Furthermore, Tom's trip was in a high favorable weather conditions, unlike the other one.
Third, the article suggests that by measuring the sun's position using shadows in Peary's photographs, it was found that it has the same position in the same day that it should have been at the North Pole. Conversely, the speaker discusses that the technical scientist who calculated the sun's position using shadows, was not accurate. She elaborates on this by mentioning that the one hundred years old primitive camera that was used by Peary had unfocused, fussy photos, which made the shadow blurred and faint, Consequently, we cannot trust those for accuracy.
