TPO 29 - Paleontologists have proposed that one of the most common North Slope dinosaurs, the elephant-sized edmontosaur (Edmontosaurus), survived the winter by migrating south to more hospitable regions. Several arguments support the migration hypothesis.

The reading and the lecturer are both about the migration hypothesis of Edmontosaurus during winter time. The author of the reading provides three supporting arguments. The lecturer challenges those three reasons because she believes they are not convincing.

First of all, the author suggests that this migration theory is supported by the dinosaur´s diet. It is noted that those animals ate exclusively plants which means they migrated to more moderate regions during winter to find food. The lecturer, however, argues this idea. It is mentioned that Edmontosaurus did not have to migrate to find food because they could eat a plenty amount of dead plants which grew abundantly during summer time when the temperature was warmer and the sun shined twenty-four hours a day.

Secondly, the writer contends that Edmontosaurus lived in herd which helped them be able to migrate long distances like other modern migratory animals such as buffalo and caribou. In contrast, the lecturer rebuts this idea by mentioning that living in heard can also be a method to protect the dinosaurs from predators. She elaborates on this idea by telling of the fact that there are other kinds of animals like apes living in herd which do not migrate.

Lastly, it is posited by the reading that Edmontosaurus migrated long distances in winter time due to the fact that they were physically capable of. It is said that this kind of dinosaur could run very fast, thus, they could use their power to move to warmer climate. The lecturer´s opinion, on the other hand, is that Edmontosaurus could not migrate such long distances of 1600 kilometers. She puts forth the idea that baby dinosaurs in the herds slowed down the herds and were unable to travel long distances. This, in turn, stopped the adult dinosaurs from migrating.
