The reading and the lecture both take about offering the employees the choice of working four hours per day per week instead of five days per day per week for eight hours per day. The reading present three benefits for this which the professor in the lecture refutes every single one of them.
First, the reading talks about how this could increase the company profit. Limiting the workhours to four per day will lower the work stress for the employes and as a result fewer errors by the exhausted workers. However, the lecture contradicts this, by saying that the companies would spend more money to the new hires, because of the training, medical health benefits and other requirements which will have the negative impact on the companies profit.
Secondly, the reading suggests that the more the staff is in a company, the better the work would be and this is as a result of the improvement in the employment rate which will follow the work hours lowering. The lecture refutes this by saying that this will be another factor who will affect badly on the companies profits. Requiring more work space and more supplies, computers, for instance, will also cost lots of money to afford.
Lastly, the reading says that the employees free time will grant the to do more activites and hobbies. However, the lecture argues that this free will increase the risk of lowering the quality of life for the employees. It claimes that it will dicrease the stability of work and make them endure a lower opportunity of getting the promotions for example, or they might be the first who will lose their jobs. As the companies might offer these perks to the five hours working employees who could take over the job by staying working for five hours instead of four.
