In the lecture, the professor discussed why the opposing ideas on whether Sinosauropteryx had furs mentioned in the passage are not plausible.

To begin with, the passage claims that the fine lines can be decomposition of other structures. However, the speaker refutes this by saying that other well-preserved fossils discovered nearby do not present similar lines, so it is likely that the unique lines in Sinosauropteryx are really functional furs.

Second, whilst the second critic believes that the fine lines have a higher possibility of being frills, the lecturer points out that the lines contains a chemical component that does not exist in frills, objective the idea that the lines are frills.

Finally, the professor argues that fur has various of functions, and study shows that furs from Sinosauroperyx were colorful, so they may serve display function, just like that of peacock, as a response to the statement in the reading passage that the distribution of the fine lines on the body of Sinosauropteryx does not indicates their functions as furs.

In conclusion, based on the reasons and analysis given in the listening material, the critics in the passage that fine lines can be degraded structures, that they can be frills and are not functional do not stand.
