TPO-31 - Integrated Writing Task A fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, preserved in volcanic ash, was discovered in Liaoning, China, in 1996. Interestingly, the fossil included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones. Some

The passage and lecture both discuss the schemes of fine lines near the Sinosauropteryx’s fossil skeleton, which has found in China. The reading points out these lines cannot be used as evidence for feather by demonstrating three counterarguments. In contrast, the professor indicates that these lines are strong proofs and the author's reasons are not convincing.

Firstly, the article posits that these lines perhaps not show the structure of a living animal and they may were formed later as skin fibers. The lecturer denies this and mentions that it is unlike that these lines are due to the decomposition of the skin. As professor says, the functional skin structures of other fossil which found in this site were preserved very well, and as a consequence the Sinosauropteryx’s lines were preserved too.

Secondly, the article says that these lines should be just frill’s trace. On the other hand, the text explains that the chemical materials of the frills are different from feathers in which the later contain a special protein that is named beta-keratin. The considerations show the signs of the aforementioned protein and as a result it is a suggestion for feathers, not frills.

Thirdly, the paper claims that feathers should use for either fly or temperature regulation, but these lines were located where that it seems they are useless. The speaker opposes this by talking that the feathers can perform another function. The professor refers to Peacock as an example. According to the listening, this creature has long feather in its tail to attract a mate. Besides, all analyzes show that Sinosauropteryx had colorful feather like orange or white that gains the supposition that told feathers were used for display.
