Based on given materials, the article as well as the lecture discusses about causes of strange sounds in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean which was heard by Russian's submarines between 1960 and 1980. The author states three theories to explain the strange sounds. That being said, the lecturer provides several ideas to repudiate this claim.

Initially, the author says that calls of male and female ocra whales could be account for this sounds. However, the lecturer explains that ocra whales are living on surface of water and Russian submarines patrolled deeply in oceans. On the other, the ocra whales are easy to detect via submarines' sonar.

Second, the writer proclaims that giant squids were the reason of producing sounds. Yet again, the speaker underscores that these sounds were heard in two decades, between 1960 and 1980, then suddenly the producing of the sounds was stopped. However, giant squids continued to live after 1980s. Based on this, they could not be the cause of voices.

The final point of contention between the reading and the listening passages is other military submarines' technology. The author thinks the strange sounds may be produced by foreign submarines which are invisible to Russian submarines' sonar. On the other hand, the speaker explains that this statement cannot hold up theory. In the past, submarines could not able to change direction swiftly. Not only old submarines but also the new ones do not have a technology which gives the ability to change direction quickly.
