TPO 33: CARVED STONE BALLSReading:Carved stone balls are a curious type of artifact found at a number of locations in Scotland. They date from the late Neolithic period, around 4,000 years ago. They are round in shape; they were carved from several types

The lecturer disputes the author's suggested theory about the uses of curved stone balls discovered during the Neolithic period . He provides several reasons to cast doubt about the author'claims

First, the lecturer contradicts the fallacy of the passage that the stones may have been used as weapons by the Neoliolithic people. He contends that it is highly unlikely that they have served this purpose because they do not have any cracks or tears on their bodies. Theoretically speaking, if they have this usage, then researchers would find some signs of wearings.

Second, according to the author the curved stones may have been used for weighing traded objects because they are similar in size. Again, the lecturer find this idea debatable. He contends by saying that similar size objects may have be used for weighing. However, they need also to have same density which is not true for the curved stones objects that indeed were discovered to have different weights.

Finally, the author argues that the curved stones have different patterns. As a result, they might have been used as personal items to show the social status. The lecturer refutes this claims by saying that it is true that the artifacts have similar patterns, however, they are simple in shape which means that it is highly unlikely that they served this purpose. Moreover, non of the artifacts were buried with their owners which is a traditional habit for people during that period.
