Both lecture and reading passage talk about the various reasons behind the extinction of large marine mammals called Steller's sea cows. While the reading article put forth three theories about how the animal became extinct, the lecture refutes the claims by pointing the unfeasibility.
First, the reading claims sea cows were good source of food to native people living in the harsh Siberian environment and over hunting by forced sea cows to extinction. However, the lecture argues that these mammals were massive in size and one sea cow would have been enough to feed the small population for months. So, native people did not have to hunt large number of sea cows.
In addition, the reading presents ecosystem disturbance as another possible reason. Kelp was the main source of food for these mammals and ecological changes hampered the kelp growth and ultimately the sea cow population. The lecture counters this point by stating if the ecological changes were severe then it would have affected other sea animals too. But the whale population did not show any decline during that time. It shows there was not food shortage, so the theory is unconvincing.
Lastly, the reading article asserts that European fur traders contributed to decline of the sea cows. These traders used weapons to hunt sea cows in large numbers. The lecture refuses the claim by pointing out that sea cows population started to decline even before the traders came to the island. Moreover, the professor adds the largest number of sea cows' population was a century before the traders arrived there.
In conclusion, the lecture disagrees with the claims discussed in the reading passage and states that the reason behind the Steller's sea cow extinction is unknown.
