TPO 36 Integrated Writing

Hail—pieces of ice that form and fall from clouds instead of snow or rain—has always been a problem for farmers in some areas of the United States. Hail pellets can fall with great force and destroy crops in the field. Over the last few decades, a method of reducing hail, called "cloud seeding," has been tried. In cloud seeding, the chemical silver iodide is sprayed on storm clouds from an airplane This makes the clouds produce harmless rain or snow instead of hail. Several pieces of evidence suggest that cloud seeding has been effective in protecting crops from hail.

The reading and the lecture are both about the effectiveness of "cloud seeding" to prevent hail. The author of the reading feels

that cloud seeding's use of chemical silver effectively reduces or stops hails. The lecturer challenges the calim made by the

author. She is of the opinion that the reasonings in support of the author's claim are faulty.

To begin with, the author argues that laboratory tests results are in favor of cloud seeding success. The article mentions that

cold water, when added with silver iodide, becomes harmless light snow. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer.

She points out that these result will just be produced in the laboratory but not in real natural conditions. Additionally, she states

the silver iodide actually reduces not only ice but also water and snow. It results in drought that harms the growth of plants and

crops.

Secondly, the writer suggests that the results in Asia help understand the effectiveness of cloud seeding. In the article, it is

stated that cloud seeding is productive in controling precipitation in city areas of Asia. The lecturer, however, refutes this by

mentioning city pollution plays a vital role in cloud seeding's success in Asia, so the USA will not be affected by the procedure

much. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that most of USA's crops are grown in urban areas where pollutions are

limited.

Finally, the author posits that lecal studies also suggest that cloud seeding will be successful. Moreover, in the article it is

demonstrated that a farming region faced less damage after using cloud seeding. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that those

good results were produced by nature itself. She notes that, the surrounding areas of east, south, and north, where cloud seeding

was not used, also faced less damage on that particular time. So cloud seeding doesn't produced the success, instead nature did.
