The reading and lecture both discuss the turtle excluder devices' drawbacks. While the reading provides three limitations of TEDS, the professor, refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading turtles are very rare to be caught be shrimpers and these TEDs will allow the shrimp to escape. On the other hand, the professor argues this notion by saying that even though catching the turtle is very rare, shrimpers can catch like thousand of turtle every year. In addition, the turtle's population is very small. So, catch thousand of turtle yearly is a big problem. As you can see, we can compare the effect on turtle as a whole population with the shrimp as a whole population.
In addition, the article mentions that we can leave the net under water for a short time. So, all turtles can get air. However, the professor contradicts this idea by pointing out that there is a big problem to manage the time that these will boats will stay in. Moreover, we can not government these boats.
Lastly, the reading states that the large turtles cannot escape. This is because the TEDs holes are not big enough. Nevertheless, the professor refutes this point by explaining that this is true that these holes are small, but we can create bigger ones. Consequently, the large TEDs will allow the big turtle to go through. As a result, this will not be a problem anymore to protect the big turtles.
