TPO 37- One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die. Some people suggest that this problem can be solved through an invention called a turtle excluder device (TED) that is incorporated into the nets. A TED provides a passage through which the turtles can escape. However, TEDs have been criticized for several reasons.

The reading and lecture are both about used of turtle excluder device (TED). The article states that TED device can help turtle from escaping the nets used by shrimp fishing boats. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that TED device protect the endangered turtle population and it is a vital part in every shrimp boat.

First of all, the author of the points out that shrimp farmers rarely caught turtle on their net. The article states that only one turtle a month is attached to their net, however, by using this method many shrimps escape in the net and it cost shrimpers a lot of money than saving one turtle. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that it is true that shrimp fishers rarely catch turtle in their net, but thousand of shrimp boats in the Southern coast of United States are deployed to the sea and they trapped thousand of turtle in their net. Furthermore, she argues that it will become a big problem because some of the turtle belongs to endangered species type. In addition, the impact of TED in the individual shrimp farmers are less harmful than the whole population of the turtle because their population will become extinct.

Secondly, the author contends that there are other ways to protect sea turtle and that are more effective than TED. The article establishes that shrimpers must limit the time catching shrimp in order for the turtles caught to be released. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that it is a good thing to implement time limit in catching shrimp for the turtle have time to be brought in the air but it is only theory. Moreover, he elaborates on this by mentioning that it is impossible to reinforce due to government patrol boats cannot oversee the whole process of fishing shrimp. Also, the use of TED device is easy to implement it just need to be attached to the fishing vessel and checked by government official before sailing.

Finally, the author states that the device is not appropriate for large endangered species. The article denotes that larger species cannot pass through the net even if it has TED standards. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the TED device can be easily be modified to accommodate large species. She puts forth the idea that if large TED are created then there ere no longer a problem with a larger turtle escaping the net.
