Essay topics:

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.

The reading and the lecture are both about employment scheduling status in the United States. The author of the reading believes that it is beneficial to have employees who works in a four day week schedule. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented. He thinks that employees who has four days schedule in a week will have less chance for career advancement.

First of all, the author points out that shortened schedule of employee would result in increase of company sales. The article states that it is due to employee will feel more relaxed and attentive, hence, the work force will be more efficient. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that companies will be forced to spend more money for their employees. He also argues that company will need to hire more workers and it costly because of their training and medical benefit packages. Also, they need more office space and additional computers and the costs only doubled by doing that, but the profit for the company declines as a result.

Secondly, the author contends that the country would benefit from it because number of employment rate will decline. The article notes that full time employees work schedule will be reduced, as a result, other employee will be given a chance for employment. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that employing additional manpower would hurt the companies income. He elaborates on this by mentioning that, the only thing that they see that can help the company is by asking their workers for overtime. Also, employers raise their expectation with their staff because they feel that the 4 days employee can also do the work load of 5 days employee and the end result would be that no jobs will be added.

Finally, the author states that the change in work days would benefit the employee itself. The article establishes that in fewer work schedule they can have quality of live because they can spend time for their family, friends and personal enjoyment. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that staff will reduce their quality of life. He puts forth that employees will feel that they have less stability and their career would be at risk as a result. Moreover, 4 day employee lose their chance for career advancement and promotion because 5 days employee has more edge to have a position in the company.
