Integrated WritingIn the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies t

The lecture points out that the arguments given in the passage about the benefits of offering the employees the option of working a four-day workweek are full of doubts and does not hold water. In fact, the lecturer disagree with the statement saying that, if employee choose to working 4 days a week instead of 5, their life can be better and it would benefit the company's economy. To support his case, the lecturer provides the following reasons.

First of all, the company will have to spend much more money, not less, if employees opted for the four-day workweek plan. In fact, the new hired staff will have to have training, computers, offices, and space. Consequently, this will cost the company and cuts its profit. Also, the overall medical benefits will increase as well since for the two recruitment strategies, they will have the same medical benefit.

Second of all, the employment rate will not be necessarily be reduced since company's can either offer work overtime for their current employees to make difference. Not only that but it can also increase its work expectation which results in greater workload that affects the employee and probably result in making more costly errors.

Finally, providing more free time for workers in the four-day workweek plan, unlike what is stated in the passage, would decrease their stability and provide them with low chance of advancement in their career. Moreover, these workers can be vulnerable in economic crisis and subject to economical downturn and even pass over in promotion.
