The reading and the lecture are both about the pros and cons of ethanol as an alternative to gasoline in the United States. The author mentioned three theories to support that replacement for gasoline is not advantageous. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.

First of all, The author points out that ethanol fuel consumption are not the solution to global warming. The author believes that its usage can lead to release of carbon dioxide in the air when fuel are burnt, so, ethanol has no environmental advantage over gasoline. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He states that ethanol usage could not lead to global warming. Furthermore, He argues that corns are widely used in the production of ethanol products, so, toxins release in the air is impossible. In addition, plants absorb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which is their source of nutrition, so, harmful substances are eradicated.

Secondly, the author contends that the increase in demand in ethanol would drastically reduced the amount of plants available in the market. The article notes that 60% of corn being grown will be allocated for mass production of ethanol, hence, food for animals would disappear. Nevertheless, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that making ethanol uses only cellulose, this part of the plant are not being eaten by the animals, thus, the number of animal feeds would not decline.

Finally, the author states that ethanol price is not competitive. The article establishes that the US government subsidize the tax in ethanol companies, for over 30 years and if the government will stop its support the price of ethanol will increase. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the government will stop subsidizing their taxes. Moreover, He puts forth the idea that as the demand increases for ethanol, thus, production also will be higher and as a result price of ethanol fuel will drop steadily.
