TPO 39.

In the reading, the author claims that at the end of Triassic period 200 million years ago, there was a mass-extinction event which annihilated many species. However, finding all ideas questionable and implausible, the professor in the listening by using a number of points refutes all readings' ideas and says that none of them is not a good explanation for mass extinction.
First off, the author argues that near the end of the Triassic period sea leves were fluctuating and often gowing down which destroyed the food chains of species which lived on the coast. Conversely, the professor disputes this point by clarifiying the fact that land species had the ability to adapt themselves to changes. Moreover, this change was quite gradual and took several million years.
Secondly, the reading holds the view that at the and of Triassic period a widspread volcanic occured which spread SO2 into the atmosphere which in turn reduced the global tempratures and led to the extinction. On the contrary, the professor states that SO2 couldn't be present into the atmosphere for a long time. it eventually will combine with atmosphere's materials and come back to the earth as the rain.
Last, the author asserts that asteroid strike have blocked sunlight for a long time which caused a mass extiction as a last point for supporting that mass extinction eliminated all kind of living. In contrast, the professor, though, dismisses this issue by pointing out that asteroide strike's time come back to 12 million years before the extinction. Therefore, it would not be a good support.
