TPO-40 - Integrated Writing Task Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would

The reading passage and the lecture both talk about environmental conditions on the planet Venus and prospects of inhabiting the planet. While the reading article talk about the problems to colonize the planet, the lecture refutes this, saying there are few possible solutions to eliminate the challenges discussed in the passage.

First of all, the reading claims Venus is an inhospitable planet because of the high atmospheric pressure on it's surface. Humans will face the same fate like the spacecrafts which landed on Venus in the past. They will get crushed under the tremendous pressure. However, the lecture argues that instead on creating a station on Venus's surface, make a floating station 50 Kilometers above the planet's surface in the atmosphere. Pressure will be far less in the atmosphere, in fact will be same as on Earth.

In addition, the article makes the argument that there are no water sources available on Venus. Also, its atmosphere is made of Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen and Sulfuric acid with tiny amount of Oxygen and water vapor. To run a successful station there, regular water and oxygen supply from Earth is required. This counteract the purpose of forming a station. The lecture counters this argument by stating the atmospheric conditions on the Venus can be advantageous. Water and Oxygen can be chemically processed using the atmospheric gases. That way the station can be self-sufficient.

Lastly, the passage argues that little amount of sunlight reaches the Venus's surface due to presence of thick clouds and dense atmospheric layer of gases. This condition will make it impossible to generate electricity using solar power cells to run machines. The lecture refutes this claim by pointing out that there will be less clouds if the station is floating 50 kilometers above the planet's surface. Moreover, the professor says the reflected sunlight from the clouds below the station and the light reaching from the sun can be used to power various machinery.

In conclusion, the lecture dismisses all the three problems discussed to maintain a human colony on Venus by suggesting possible solutions to overcome the problems.
