A discovery of fossil structures resembling bee nests, dating back to about 200 million years, leads some researchers to doubts about the time that bee exists before. The article pushes forth the idea that it is not possible that bees were existed about 200 million years ago and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecturer explains that the idea is plausible and refutes each of author’s reasons.
First, the author states because no fossil remains of an actual bee have been found which could be dated back to 200 million years, so bees were not existed more than 100 million years ago, as the age of the oldest fossil containing bee. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges the author’s point of view believing that the found nest has been fossilized in a resin of a particular tree which was so rare in 200 million years ago. But when the trees became much more common in the environment, the bees could be fossilised in the resin of those threes. Therefore, the author's idea is not convincing.
Second, the reading posits that bees feed on the flowering plant, but this kind of plants first appeared in 125 million years ago. In contrast to what is argued in the passage, the lecturer contends that it is possible that bees at first feed on a non-flowering plant like pine trees, and then, as time passed and flowering plants were evolved, bees got started to adapt to flowering-plant and this link of the relation remained stable since then. Consequently, it is possible that bees exist before flowering plant existence, which means they live before 125 million years ago.
Third, although the author of the passage thinks that the fossil structure found in Arizona have some differences with new nests like lacking caps with a spiral pattern for closing the nest, the lecturer casts doubt this idea by pointing out that there are some pieces of evidence that show similarity between the nest structure in the fossil and modern nests. She says that a water-proof system with a special and distinct chemical is found in the fossil which is the same as the material used in the contemporary nest. As a result, the author’s reason is baseless, and it is possible that bees existed 200 million years ago.
