TPO-46 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, medical information about patients traditionally has been recorded and stored on paper forms. However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which informa

In the lecture, the professor discusses why using digital medical records to replace paper ones are not as promising as presented in the reading.

To begin with, the reading passage claims that by deploying electronic medical records, the cost of storing, copying and transferring paper-based medical records can be eliminated, which is more economic, as well as making records more approachable to doctors. Nonetheless, the speaker refutes this and argues that even though doctors shift to electronic recording system, paper form of records will not be totally abandoned for certain reasons. Hence, electronic medical records are not that cost-effective.

Next, contrary to the second statement in the reading that electronic medical records are less vulnerable to errors, the lecturer points out that doctors tend to write on papers while meeting patients and the paper records are subsequently typed into the database, during which mistakes are still likely to occur due to unrecognizable hand writing and poor organization.

Finally, the instructor rules out the possibility of easier research by storing medical records electronically. It is not the handling of data but the privacy law to protect patients, as the speaker asserts, that impede researchers from accessing medical records freely. Despite the ability to save huge amounts of records, databases are still not open to scientists, just like paper archives.
