The reading passage and the lecture both talk about the desalination process of salton lake in America. The passage indicates three possible solutions which can reduce the salinity and save the fish and bird living in this lake. But the lecturer cast doubt on the solutions that has been given by the passage.
The author says that one most helpful solution of desalination is passing the lake water into desalination facilities and evaporation of water and cooled the esteem into pure water. The lecturer thinks that it might cause severe health problem because by this process poisonous selenium(Se) can be mixed with water from air when evaporation occur.
Secondly the passage mentions about pipe line that would be helpful if sea water can mix with this lake water to dilute the salty lake water. But the lecture says that it will not so convincing, this process requires long pipeline about 100 km that would be so expensive to establish, which is impossible.
Thirdly, the passage mention that if several wall can be built into the lake it would reduce the salinity, on the other hand the lecture claims that the lake’s position is in a geographic area whereas earthquake is frequent phenomena. So if earthquake happens frequently it can causes damage to the wall.
