TPO 8 – task 1

The professor discusses the veracity of Chevalier's memoir and states that, although no memoir is correct in every detail, reliable sources exist about the accuracy of this memoir. The information she presents is in direct contrast with the facts outlined in the reading passage.

First, the lecturer indicates that in Swiss, countless people spend their money in parties and gambling. In some scenarios, it takes time to recover their money, which they spent on gambling or parties; hence, chevalier capitulated to borrow some money from his friend, since he were run out of money and it would take so much time to get his money back. Indeed, because he did not have money at that particular moment, he borrowed some money. However, the reading passage posits that Chevalier was not very wealthy based on some superficial observations.

Second, the speaker makes the point that Chevalier used to take numerous notes from conversations and lectures and keep them safe all the time. According to the professor, many contemporary individuals approve this claim that he kept numerous notes from conversations for many years. On the other hand, the article specifies that memoir cannot possibly capture the conversations accurately, since they occurred many years ago.

Finally, the professor asserts that in that prison, countless prisoners with politically well-connected friends are held; nevertheless, they could not escape at all. Therefore, it is not convincing that Chevalier was the only person who afforded to escape with bribery and political connections. Moreover, as the professor said, in accordance to a governmental document, the ceiling of the prison had to be repaired. This is an evidence plainly supports the fact that Chevalier escaped through the ceiling as he described in the memoir. On the contrary, the reading passage cites that it is more likely that the Chevalier's jailers were bribed to free him.
