TPO42: integrated writing task

In modern architecture, glass is the chief material and is being used extensively, however, as birds can not distinguish between opening area and glass a vast number of them are injured by hitting to glass. The author of the passage proposes three potential solutions to this problem, however, the lecturer rebuts these solutions and he believes they will not address the problem effectively.

First of all, the author asserts that using one-way glass can be a good solution. This kind of glass is transparent for indoor individuals but outdoor people and birds can not see the inside of the building. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this assertion by explaining that these glasses act just like a mirror and reflect the image of sky and trees, hence, it is possible that birds fly into them.

Secondly, the author proposes using painted glass which has a kind of design like colorful stripes and there are opening between stripes, so indoor individuals can see the outdoor but when birds see the stripes avoid hitting to the glass. By contrast, the lecturer states that these kinds of glasses would not be an appropriate solution unless the space between stripes be extremely narrow and in this case, the room would be dim.

Finally, the author mentions that since birds are capable of using the earth's magnetic field for navigation, the human can take advantage of this characteristic and equip the buildings with a strong artificial magnetic field in order to deviate the birds. The speaker, conversely, states that this solution would not be effective by explaining that birds use their ability to navigate by means of earth's magnetic field only for long-distance, for instance in migration from a cold place into a warmer place. For short distances, they use their eyes and brightness instead of the magnetic field.
