The reading and the lecture are both about the on-going debate of having four days a week instead of five days a week. The reading states that the having a four days a week helps us in reducing unemployment, spending more time with family and increase in productivity. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the main points in the reading and provide counter reasons for the same.
To begin with, according to the reading, having a four day and paying only 80 percent of the wage, will not affect the companies revenue and profits. They can hire new people to complete the work on-time. However, the lecturer says that hiring new employees may cost a lot to companies. Costs include training new hires, getting new equipment needed and additional office space. He points out that due to increase in these costs, the companies profits may go down significantly and affect the company.
Secondly, the reading claims that the left over work due to reduction in working time can be compensated by hiring new employees. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. He argues that the company may not be willing to spend additional costs to hire new employees. He says that the companies may increase the expectations or ask the employees to work overtime. He claims that this may lead more unpleasant work environment.
Finally, the reading states that the employees will get more time to spend with their family and could improve the quality of their life. The lecturer opposes this point by saying that the employee may face risks by choosing to work four days a week. Employees working five days a week will be preferred compared to ones will to work four days. They will be first ones to let out in case companies are laying off employees due to various reasons. Also, lecturer points out that may not advance in their careers due to decrease in output from them.
In conclusion, although the reading and lecture are both about having four days a week for employees. The lecturer opposes main points made in the reading.
