The wooly mammoth was a prehistoric animal that resembled an elephant and lived during the Ica Age.
The reading and the lecture are both about the factors which could have been responsible for extinction of wooly mammoth. According to the reading passage there were two main reasons which could have let to the dramatic decline in the population of mammoth, those reasons are global warming and overhunting. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. By using the following evidence she posits that neither climate change nor overhunting would have led to the rapid decline in population of wooly mammoth.
To begin with, there is no definite evidence that the warming of climate actually affected the mammoth. The lecturer agrees that the cool environment is more friendly to the mammoth. She contends that the mammoth could just move to the north. This point differs from the author’s according to which the change in climate could have been responsible for the extinction of mammoth.
Furthermore, the professor posits that the mammoth did not have any natural predators. She weakens the author’s point by drawing a parallel between a modern lion and an ancient tiger, which was not large enough to hunt mammoth. This counters the point according to which a saber-toothed tiger could break through thick skin of a mammoth killing it.
By the same token, ancient people could not have been responsible for the extinction of the mammoth just because the mammoth was a suitable animal for humans’ needs. She contends that ancestors could use the bones, skin and meet from other preys which are more easy to hunt on such as buffalos or bears. This point differs from one in the article, according to which humans are also responsible for overhunting the mammoth.
