The graphs show the spending on health and education and changes in infant mortality and life expectancy in the UAE. Overall, as the percentage of health and education expenditure increased, life expectancy and infant mortality were also improved.
The first graph indicates the percentage of GDP spent on health and education between 1985 and 1993. There were considerable increases in both categories. Education spending skyrocketed from 10% in 1985 to 14% in 1990 and then continued to rise slightly and reached 15% 3 years later. As for health, despite falling to 7% in 1990, the figure significantly soared in 1993, with 10% of the total GDP spent.
The second graph demonstrates improvements in life expectancy and infant mortality in the 1970-1992 period. In 1970, people were only expected to live until 60 but this number increased to around 71 in 1992. In contrast, the number of babies dying dropped dramatically, from 70 per 1000 to just 20 in 1992.
