Your class has watched a round-table discussion about what young people can learn from older generations. You have made the notes below:
Areas where young people could learn from older generations:
• work
• relationships
• money
Some opinions expressed in the discussion:
‘People with work experience can tell you what the job you’re considering is really like.’
‘Older people can give wise advice when you have a problem with a friend.’
‘It’s hard to manage your money when you start living independently.’
Write an essay discussing two of the areas in your notes. You should explain in which area young people could gain most from older generations, giving reasons in support of your answer. You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as far as possible.
Learning by an exchange of knowledge and experiences between generations may enable the youth achieve great results in different areas. But what exactly can younger people gain in this experience interchange? This essay is going to discuss two possible areas where the youth could gain more experience with the help of the older generation.
To begin with, older generations may help the youth choose the profession and learn its probable difficulties as well as benefits. People with work experience who exceled in their profession are likely to be in the know about peculiarities and thus may share the precious knowledge to smooth the way for the younger generations. For example, they may share the steps to go through so that you could receive promotions and reach top positions.
Alternatively, it might prove beneficial for the youth to learn to appreciate relationships. Having met a great number of personalities older people are known to be wise in terms of the art of building communication and making friends. Not only are they able to see their real nature but also give invaluable advice if you happen to have problems with friends. Should younger people only welcome these wise pieces of advice, they will avoid making the regrettable mistakes.
Taking into account the above discussed areas of learning from older generation, I may conclude that the most significant one seems to be relationships because it is one of the areas which hardly undergoes any changes in comparison to work related issues. Thus, the older people are sure to give personal advice that will not lose its relevance.
