Passing knowledge from a generation to the next ones is one the most important reasons why mankind has progressed rapidly especially in the recent centuries. Therefore, the issue of finding appropriate education and learning approaches have been of utmost importance for societies. Given that, the issue of finding ways to encourage students to study and learn more has been a contentious one. At the heart of the debate are the arguments between the experts who favor importance of grade based evaluation and the ones who oppose this idea. Although grades sometimes are not the best index to compare students, I believe they are highly successful in encouraging students to study and learn more. In the follwing paragraphs tow persuasive arguments will be presented to support grading in schools.
The first aspect that deserves to be outlined is that grades will stimulate the sense of competition among students. Human being, by nature, is prone to prove that he is the best in as much as fields he can. Therefore, he craves competition. In order to encourage students to study more, a proper method is to stimulate this sense of competition. Since grades provide a clear and quantittive refrence framework for comparison between students' qualities, I believe grades are successful in provoking the ambition of being the best and encouraging student to study more. Consequently, they learn better.
Apart from the point mentioned above, one cannot overlook the fact that grades are able to show us our weaknesses well. Since we do not like to be known as a weak person, if we know which fields we are not educated properly, we will be encouraged to study more and enhance our performance there. Therefore, low grades not only encourage us to study well, it also points us the fields and courses which we should study more.
In a word, owing to the points and causes pointed out above, it appears reasonable to draw the conclusion that grades encourage us to study better and consequently learn more because it stimulates human beings will to be the best and also it shows our weaknesses which we should cover.
