Social loafing is defined as a decrease in personal effort and efficiency in a group in comparison to that of individuals. The professor brings up an example to illustrate this. In a study, people were asked to do an ordinary task, peeling as many potatoes as possible in a given time. Some worked alone and the number of peeled potatoes by each person was recorded. Others worked together in a group and every individual’s work was not recorded but the total number of potatoes was recorded. When the researcher compared the results in two groups, the results indicated that the average score among people who worked together in a group was less than that of individual peelings. In fact, every individual peels more number of potatoes when he does it alone compared to each person in a group.
