The table below shows changes in the numbers of residents cycling to work in different areas of the UK between 2001 and 2011.
The table compares the numbers of people who used bicycles to commute to work in twelve areas of the UK in the years 2001 and 2011.
Overall, it is evident that the number of people traveling to work by bike rose significantly over the 10-year period. In addition, Inner London had the highest number of bicycle users to reach their workplaces while Gateshead had the lowest number of such bicycle riders in both years.
In 2001, Inner London had more than 43 thousand bicycle riders and this figure rose to more than 106 thousand in 2011, an increase of 144%, which accounted for the largest among the 12 areas of the UK. By contrast, although Outer London stood at the second position in the number of people cycling to work each year, its percentage change was the lowest, at only 45%.
After 10 years, the number of people who cycled to work in Brighton and Hover, and Bristol experienced a considerable rise, which was 109% and 94% higher than that of 2001 respectively. In other areas, the figures for cycling commuters were below 10 thousand in both years.
