The luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals.

The luxuries and conveniences that modern day life provides for humanity has indeed weakened and pampered us individuals from developing into mature, strong and independent beings. This is because we constantly depend on these luxuries to carry out even the simplest tasks. From computers to smart phones to flamboyant cars, almost every aspect of our present-day lives is filled with a luxurious presence which has stunted our personal development.

With the arrival of modern technology, individuals have distanced themselves from social interaction. Teenagers opt for virtual interactions over the more conventional methods. The current addiction to and overuse of social networking sites has stolen useful time that could have been routed towards performing tasks such as studying, doing one’s laundry, cooking a meal or simply interacting with your family or friends. Eventhough the internet could be used for meaningful purposes such as staying in touch or researching an important topic for a school assignment; its constant use for petty tasks has corrupted us and stunted our growth into strong and independent individuals.

Constant dependency on these luxuries also brings with it lethargy and the need to follow the easiest route to complete a simple task. Internet shopping, for example, is now replacing the conventional shopping of setting aside a few hours in one’s daily schedule to travel to a supermarket and handpick the groceries or purchase clothes and accessories from a department store. Libraries are rarely being used now because people prefer reading electronic books on their computers, mobile phones and tablets rather than flipping the pages of a printed book. Thus, in order to save time and energy people are willing to sacrifice the little joys and experiences that one gets in performing these tasks the harder way.

Critics may argue that the evolution of technology and the presence of these luxuries have made life easier by saving time and energy which could be directed towards other meaningful tasks. But, are we really doing that? As we move forward into the future it is blatant that mankind will continue to slant towards a more convenient lifestyle. People have become so addicted to these luxuries that it has now become difficult for them to even carry out petty task without depending on them.

Hence, the use of these luxuries has hampered personal development due to overuse and dependency. Instead of depending on these luxuries if we take the harder route to accomplishing a task, there is no doubt that the experiences along the way to achieving it will help us mature and grow into strong and independent individuals.
