The first step to self-knowledge is rejection of the familiar.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position

Self-knowledge and the propensity for achieving it keeps a person afloat with the incidents and the overall picture of the present world. The first step to self-knowledge is rejection of the familiar. I do not agree with this statement since inorder to achieve self-knowledge, it is not necessary to reject what is familiar. The paragraphs below provide the reasoning behind my position.

Knowledge is a piece of information that we acquire when we are familiar with something that is already preexisting. It is not necessary to reject the preexisting familiarity with information inorder to attain self-knowledge. It can be true that the knowledge we are familiar with can help as a stepping stone to gain further insights into a specific domain. For example, a curious chemistry student, who has recently learnt the periodic table for elements can go on internet to learn more about the noble elements present in the world. The periodic table is a piece of information that the student is familiar with, and he uses it as a stepping stone towards gaining self-knowledge. Rejection of familiar information is not always the go-to step for gaining self-knowledge.

Newspapers, blogs, online content are excellent sources of self-knowledge for the genration that exsists today. A recent economic graduate can access these online blogs or read the newspapers to gain some knowledge about the global economy, the national economy of his country and some other aspects that he was not exposed to during his tenure as a graduate student. This information is out there for the world to access it. And interested individuals can do so as a daily practice so that they gain valuable insights about their field of interest. This again suggests that refuting familiar information is not the right approach towards gaining self-knowledge. Rather, it is a better approach to habituate oneself with the trends of different news outlets so that a person can know where to look for information whenever it be necessary.

People can argue that when you reject the familiar, you strive for something that is undiscovered and that is out there to be discovered. It is true that such an approach brings about a sense of encouragement to the individual to yearn for self-knowledge. But it cannot be the case always. There are ample solutions and supporting evidences out there which prove that something familiar we know is sometimes really hard to refute or reject while striving for self-knowledge. Though, it is never a bad approach to build upon familiar knowledge and look to gain something new out of it.

In sum, I would still deny the statement that first step to self-knowledge is rejection of the familiar. On the contrary, familiar can most of the times aid as the base for self-knowledge to build upon.
