According to the pie chart, the major causative factor for the decline in productive capacity of agricultural land all over the globe is over-grazing, accounting for 35percent. It is followed by deforestation and over-cultivation, at 30percent and 28percent, respectively. Another 7percent consists of miscellaneous causes that lead to degradation of agricultural land.

The table provides information regarding sources of land degradation in North America, Europe and Oceania, specifically during the 1990s. In North America, total land degraded was 5percent, of which 3.3percent was due to over-cultivation, 1.5percent due to over-grazing and 0.2percent due to deforestation. In Europe, total area affected was 23percent, of this 9.8percent was due to deforestation, 7.7percent due to over-cultivation and 5.5percent due to over-grazing.
