The bar chart below gives information about the percentage of the population living in urban areas in different parts of the world.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of people living in urban areas for 6 continents in three different time periods (1950, 2007 and 2050).
Overall, there is an increasing trend seen in urban population across all the continents. North America had the highest percentage of citizens living in urban areas in 1950 and also projected to remain highest at the end of 2050, whereas Africa had the smallest proportion of population residing in urban localities and it remains that way till 2050.
Regarding Africa, in 1950 it had only 15% of its population living in urban areas. This number rose gradually to 62% in 2050. Following almost the same trend of Africa, Asia's urban population steadily rose from 17% in 1950 to 66% in 2050. In contrast to above two continents, Oceania had a higher percentage of urban population in 1950 (62%) but the 12% increase in its percentage over a century was very insignificant as compared to other continents.
Europe's urban population stood at 51% in 1950 which grew dramatically by 21% till 2007 and at last is expected to be 84% by the end of 2050. the urban population of Latin America also took a significant jump from 42% in 1950 to 76% in 2007 and is predicted to be 89% by 2050. In case of North America, a very gradual upward trend is seen in urban population from 64% in 1950 to 79% in 2007 which is expected to increase further by 11% till 2050.
