The bar chart below shows the employment of all male and female workers by occupation in the UK in the year 2005

The bar chart compares the employment rates between the UK male and female workers in many occupations in 2005. At first glance, there was a preference in male workers for skilled trades jobs whereas it was administrative and secretarial jobs for women.

It can be seen easily that the similar pattern that process, plant and machine operatives, and administrative and secretarial occupations shared was a huge gap in gender employment. The number of male workers employed in skill trades jobs was totally decuple that of female (about 2% for women and 20% for men). In contrast, employers favored female workers over male when it came to works relating to personal service. The total amount of women was approximately 12% higher than the other gender.

Unlike those four areas, professional, elementary and associate professional and technical works showed a gender balance in their workplace. The largest gap between the two sexes was only 3%, which was negligible.

Although the sex discrimination in managers and senior officials, and sales and customer service professions was evidently seen. The difference was still at an acceptable level, with the number of women only doubled that of men in the former jobs and was one-third the size of men’s rate in the latter.
