The bar chart below compares the proportion of USA citizen who living alone in various age groups from 1850 to 2000
Overall, it is clear that the percentage of all age group increased significantly over the period. The highest proportion is in the 55-64 age group.
There was a slight growth in the percentage of 55-64 and 47-54 age group from 3%, 2.5% in 1850 to just below 4%, 3% in 1990, respectively. The figure stayed the same 2.5% in the 37-46 age group over 50 years from 1850. In 1990, the proportion of 27-36 age group appeared just above 2%.
In 1950, the figure of four age groups rose continuously, and the new appearance of the percentage of 17-26 age group accounted for nearly 2%. Fifty years later, the proportion of the 55-64 age group reached a peak of 17%, and this group also had the largest figure of jumping about 14% in the whole period. In 2000, the percentage of 47-54, 37-46, 27-36, 17-36 age group also grew dramatically and reached their highest point at 13%, 7%, 8%, 5% over 150 years, respectively.
