The bar chart shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

The bar chart displays the variations in the proportions of houses for ownership and rental from 1918 to 2011 in the U.K and Wales.

Generally speaking, there are two trends. First being that during the first fifty years, more people paid rent for their residential areas , whereas the trend took a turn as more houses were owned after the following years.

With regard to owner accommodation, the proportions of citizens started at 20. Then, from the period of 1939-1953, it remained the same, accounting for approximately 32%. Next, it rose slightly by merely 8%, and stayed the same level as rented houses, which each accounted for one half. There is a consistent rise throughout the following 20 years, however in 2011 it declined marginally by about 10%.

As for rented accommodation, it reached a high peak of over 75% in the first year. Then it remained stable for 14 years, afterwards there was a downturn, which eventually fell to 50%, the same as owned. Next, it continued to drop dramatically, from 50% to just over 30% for 20 decades. Surprisingly, there was a small increase in the final year, finishing at 35%.
