In the first year, 1970, total number of births stood at 1.2 million, 0.2 million higher than the death rates (1 million). Over the next 10 years, the birth rates remained static at 1.2 million, while the figure for the deaths experienced a rise by 30% compared to 1970. This was followed by a moderate increase in both birth and death rates by 0.5 and 0.2 million respectively.
Over the following 10 years, the birth rates experienced a dramatic growth, although much steeper, as the figure nearly doubled compared to 1970, while the death rates dropped substancially and reached the same level as it was in 1970.
