The chart below illustrates the portion of households in personal and rented accommodation between 1918 and 2011 in England and Wale.
Overall, at the beginning of the survey (1918) to 1961, a significant portion of people in England and Wale lived in rented accommodation. Midway (1971), a balance in the percentage of households in rented and owned accommodation was accomplished. This trend changed as more people now live in personal apartment than rented apartment from 1981 to 2011.
In 1918, a significant portion of people ( about 79%) lived in rented apartment. This pattern continued until in 1971, when 50% of the people were able to own an apartment. From 1981 to 2001, the rate at which people rent accommodation declined to about 31% although a slight increase in accommodation renting (about 36%) was observed in 2011.
On the other hand, a reverse in pattern of owned accommodation bwas noticed in 1918 with an insignificant number of people in the UK having personal accommodation (about 23%). There exists a change in such pattern as more people began to own apartment from 1939 ( about 33%) to about 69% in 2011. There was a minimal decrease in apartment ownership in 2011 where about 65% lived in owned accommodation
