The first chart below illustrates energy usage in a normal Australian household. The second chart demonstrates the corresponding greenhouse gas emissions emanating from this energy usage.
Overall, Australian household spend more energy for heating purposes but emits more greenhouse gases through water heating.
In terms of energy usage, Australian household consumes almost half of their total energy (42%) on various activities that involves heating. This is closely followed by usage of energy for water heating procedures (30%). Energy spent on other appliances took 15% of Australian household energy consumption while people living in Australia consumed only a total of 13% of their energy on refrigeration, cooling and lighting.
On the other hand, although Australian household spend more energy on heating than on water heating, water heating generated more greenhouse gas (32% of the total emitted greenhouse gas).
This is greenhouse gas emissions is closely followed by gas emission by other appliances (28%). It is pertinent to note that greenhouse gas emissions exceeded energy usage in all usage categories except heating which emitted less gas (15%) when compared to usage (42%).
