The bar graph provides information about the percentage of households which were in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, it can be seen that the percentage of household which was in owned accommodation increased significantly over a 93-year period in England and Wales whereas the percentage of household which was in rented accommodation showed the opposite trend over the same period.

Looking at the graph in more detail, it is evident that the proportion of household which was in rented accommodation in 1918 in England and Wales was higher than in owned accommodation, at nearly 80% and just over 20% respectively. Household in owned accommodation in rented accommodation stood at almost 70% in 1939, compared to approximately 32% for in owned accommodation. These figures remained unchanged in 1953. In 1971, the percentages of household in owned accommodation and household in rented accommodation were the same, at 50%.

Turning to the remaining data, it is clear that 60% of households were in owned accommodation in 1981. By 1991, this figure had increased to nearly 70%. Households which were in rented accommodation plunged from 40% to around 32%, between 1981 and 1991. The percentages of households in owned accommodation and rented accommodation in the year of 2001 stood at about 69% and around 31%, respectively. At the end of the graph, the former decreased to approximately 64% and the latter increased markedly to about 38%.
