The bar chart illustrates the proportion of households in owning and renting accommodations in England and Wales during the period from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, the percentage of households in owned accommodations had increased in England and Wales from 1918 until 2001 followed by a slight decline in 2011. On the other hand, the proportion of owned accommodations gradually rose until 2001 with a modest drop in 2011. In addition to that, in 1971, the rented and owned households had a proportion of 50% each.

In terms of owning accommodations, the percentage of households rose from about 22% in 1918 to almost 70% in 2001, which is threefold in less than 90 years. From 2001 to 2011 the percentage of households showed a reduction nearing 5%.

With regards to renting settlement, the percentage went down from nearly 77% in 1918 to around 32% in 2001, which represents a reduction of approximately one-third in about 80 years. From 2001 to 2011, however, there was a 5% rise in rented accommodations.
