The chart gives the information about owning and renting accommodation by families in England and Wales within the year of 1918 and 2011.
In general, there is an upward trend in house ownership whereas the rented accommodation witnessed a downward trend throughout the years. Only in 1971, both of the trends were equal in percentage at 50. Prior to 1971, the vast majority of households lived in rented houses with the highest percentage of nearly 80. After 1971, the figures showed a gradual decline with 301 in 2001, followed by a slight increase in the later ten years.
Meanwhile, the 20 percent of household ownership in 1918 significantly expanded throughout the years, reaching its peak at nearly 70% in 2001. Nonetheless, the highest trends of the owned housings from 1981 to 2001 do not necessarily surpass those of the rented housing in the former decades.
Overall, more people in England and Wales lived in rented accommodation before the 1970s and more people preferred owning houses in the post-1970s.
