The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar chart illustrates data about the proportions of families living in their own or rented houses in England and Wales over a 93-year period, from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, rented accommodation was the dominant choice of households at the beginning of the period in question. However, that trend completely reversed in 2011, when those who dwell in their own houses accounted for the majority.

In 1918, more than three-quarters of households in England and Wales had to rent accommodation, compared to around 22% of families who had their own houses. While the former saw a gradual decrease over the next decades, an opposite pattern was seen in the latter, before both figures finally shared the same contribution of 50% in 1971.

From this year onward, the percentage of households in rented accommodation continued to fall moderately and hit a low of roughly 30 percent in 2001, after which it slightly rose by roughly 5 percent in 2011. The figure for families who have their own living space went on increasing and peaked at nearly 70 percent in 2001, following which it slightly dipped until the end of the period.
